Mackerel Curry & Tilapia Fish Fry
The yummiest Mackerel Curry a.k.a Bangada rassa with Tilapia fish fry made with Aai’s recipe was today’s dinner. I was born and brought up in Shivaji Park in Mumbai and was a frequent visitor to the Mahim Fish Market. I still miss the process of buying the mackerel from the market ,cleaning it and then making the curry. Here in US you get Mackerel at the Ranch 99 market and is of a good quality.
This curry is a simple one but is made very differently. One of the main ingredient is kokam which gives it the unique tangy flavor.
I follow the recipe to make bombil curry and it turns out great!
Ingredients
Mackerel 2 big, cut into slices
1 big onion sliced
1/2 cup dry desiccated coconut
6 kashimiri mirchi
1 inch ginger
4 pods of garlic
1 tsp turmeric powder
1 tbsp coriander cumin powder
4 curry leaves
6 piece of kokam
salt as per taste
For tadka
2 tbsp coconut oil
6-8 curry leaves
1 tsp mustard seeds
Method
Soak kashimiri mirchi in water for a hour.
Also soak kokam in water. Keep it aside
Add 2 cups of warm water to all ingredients except mackerel and oil. Grind it and make a fine paste.
Now transfer this paste and kokam to a pan and boil. After the 1st boil add fish to the curry. Add salt and let it boil for 10 mins.
In a separate utensil make tadka with the mentioned ingredients. Now add the tadka to the curry and boil it for 5 mins.
Serve it hot.
