Katachi Amti Recipe
Katachi Amti is a spicy dal made from the leftover water from boiled chana dal used for making puran poli. It is a very popular in Maharashtra and is best accompanied with Puran Poli.
Katachi Amti with Puran Poli is served as a prasad during Ganpati, Holi, etc
It is spicy and extremely flavorful. In most areas of Maharashtra, Puran Poli is eaten by dipping it in Katachi Amti. The sweet puran poli and spicy katachi amti compliment each other well.
Ingredients
½ cup chana dal/split Bengal gram
4 cup water
For making paste
5 tbsp dry coconut
1 tbsp ginger garlic paste
2 tsp garam masala
1 tsp shahjeera
2-3 cloves
1 cinnamon
1 whole green cardamom
For tempering
Oil
1 tsp asafetida
2-3 crushed garlic
5-6 curry leaves
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 tsp mustard seeds
2 tbsp Kala tikhat
(substitute-1 tbsp red chilli powder+1 tbsp garam masala)
chopped coriander leaves
salt
Method
Boil the dal. It will take time to get cooked or you can pressure cook it.
In the time being, grind the coconut, ginger garlic paste, garam masala, shahjeera, cloves cinnamon, green cardamom with water into a thick paste.
Now heat oil in a pan.
Add asafetida, garlic, curry leaves, cumin seeds, mustard seeds, chopped coriander and let it temper.
Now add the coconut paste, kala tikhat and salt. Let it cook till oil separates.
Finally add the boiled dal. Let it boil for 15 mins.
At the end sprinkle coriander leaves.
Serve it with Puran Poli. It tastes good with rice too.
